Glossary of Eco-Lingo:
Alternative Energy- Clean and environmentally friendly energy created by sources such as solar, wind and water; not non-renewable sources like coal or oil.
Alternative Fuel- A transportation fuel that is not a fossil fuel such as ethanol and bio fuels.
Biodegradable- The ability of a material or substance to be broken down by natural processes then absorbed by the eco-system quickly and without harmful effects to the environment.
Carbon Credit- A permit that allows the holder to emit one ton of carbon dioxide because of their reduction of greenhouse gases.
Carbon Footprint- A measure of the total amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases produced by someone or something, all of which can contribute to climate change.
Carbon Neutral- A company, person or action that does not produce carbon emissions or offsets the gases elsewhere.
Climate Change- A change in global temperatures and weather patterns over time brought on by natural processes or accelerated by human activity such as burning fossil fuels.
Daylighting- Illuminating a space using sunlight or natural light.
Energy Efficient- Products and systems that are able to use less energy than conventional counterparts while performing the same function.
Gasification- The process of breaking down a solid waste and turning it into a gas.
Greenhouse Effect- The process in which certain gases trap heat from the sun, increasing the overall temperature of the Earth.
Greenhouse Gasses- Gases in the Earth’s atmosphere that create the Greenhouse effect. They include carbon dioxide, methane and ozone.
Kilowatt- A standard metric unit of measurement for electricity, equal to 1,000 watts.
LED- Stands for light emitting diode, LEDs are used as a light source. They are considerably more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, and offer more hours of light.
Renewable Resource- Something that can be used over and over to produce energy without being used up. Examples are wind, water and solar power.
Solar Energy- Energy created by the sun collected from things like panels or towers.
Wastewater Treatment- The process of removing contaminants from sewage.
Wind Power- Energy generated by wind.
